The 16th International Science Youth Forum at Hwa Chong Institution, Singapore (8-12 January 2024)

Two S5 students participated in the 16th International Science Youth Forum (ISYF) hosted by Hwa Chong Institution, Singapore, held from 8th to 12th January 2024. This programme aims to provide a platform for aspiring young scientists worldwide to interact with each other and share their passion in science. We are immensely grateful for the opportunities and exciting journeys ISYF has provided as we explored a tapestry of technology, culture and scientific wonders in the span of five days.

Upon arrival, we were immediately greeted by the student facilitators from Hwa Chong Institution, who were always eager to extend their support and kindness. Throughout the programme, we interacted with numerous other delegates from different parts of the world, creating bonds as strong as our shared passion for science and research. Even as we differ in cultural background and areas of interest, we were able to embrace our differences by celebrating unity through science.

Poster Exhibition

As we embarked on a journey of scientific discovery in the Poster Exhibition session, we were highly inspired by the brilliance and creativity of other delegates, who were as passionate about sharing their research projects as we were. This was an enriching experience for us to unveil innovative ideas and uncover exciting realms in science.

Masterclasses and Lectures

Numerous opportunities were provided for our exploration of higher learning. In the masterclasses, we had the privilege of attending lectures delivered by prominent scientists of various fields of interest, in which they shared their scientific journeys and enhanced our understanding of their research foci. The dialogue sessions following these masterclasses also allowed us to unravel enigmas and quench our curiosity in an in-depth manner. We had the opportunity to attend the masterclass conducted by Sir Tim Hunt, who generously shared his research journey and offered words of wisdom to us fellow delegates. Delving into his discovery of cyclins as a driving factor behind different stages of the cell cycle, we realized the importance of preparing our minds during scientific discovery such that we can seize valuable opportunities when they come our way.

Furthermore, Professor Sow Chorng Haur from the National University of Singapore provided us an awe- inspiring glimpse into the realm of nanoscience by his captivating lecture and enlightening demonstrations. The keynote lecture delivered by Professor Duncan Haldane also invited us to delve into the depths of quantum mechanics through a mind-stretching journey of intellectual exploration.

Throughout the week, several science tasks were also assigned to each group to work on. These intellectual activities prompted us to step out of our comfort zone and explore more advanced topics. We also broadened our perspectives through the sharing of other delegates who came up with brilliant solutions to these problems.

Singapore Discovery Trail

Apart from academic exchanges, we explored the bustling metropolis of Singapore with our own groups, exploring landmarks such as the Science Centre and the Bird Paradise. The immersive and vast array of science exhibitions allowed us to learn about various fields in a light-hearted and engaging way. The visit to the Bird Paradise was another memorable experience, where we witnessed the beauty of nature and understood the efforts the country has put into promoting sustainability and preserving these wonderful creatures. The Singapore Discovery Trail also allowed us to widen our horizons on their cultural tapestry and bond with other delegates.

Cultural Exchange

Through a series of presentations and showcases, delegates around the globe shared their diverse traditions during cultural programmes. During the Cultural Hour, we conducted a presentation on Cantonese and Canto-pop, introducing the delegates to Hong Kong’s unique culture. For the cultural exhibition, we prepared traditional Hong Kong snacks, including the iconic “white rabbit candy” and “wife cake”, and put up a poster that covered interesting facts about Hong Kong. It has been enlightening to learn about the diverse heritage and cultural traditions of different countries around the world.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude towards Miss P.M.L. Cheung for providing us with such a valuable opportunity to learn, and for making the necessary arrangements for our travel. We are also grateful for Ms. A. Lai, who accompanied us throughout the trip and supported us during the course of preparation. Our gratitude also goes to the organizing committee from Hwa Chong Institution for their meticulous preparation efforts put into this international event. Last but not least, we would like to thank Mrs. Lau for continuously supporting our pursuit in science and expanding our horizons through various programmes.
