From 30th October to 3rd November 2023, twenty Secondary 4 students travelled to Zhenjiang, China, to participate in an exchange programme with students from Zhenjiang Chongshi Girls' High School.

We were warmly welcomed by our student buddies and teachers who waited for us by the school’s entrance. After a brief introduction session and an opening ceremony, we were already actively sharing our experiences and school life with each other. We had a tour of the school as our buddies introduced each unique part of their school to us as well as their school’s representative windmill. We were amazed by their massive school campus: the gorgeous scenery and school buildings made us even more eager for classes to begin.

At dusk, we headed to the Xijin Ferry. The rich history, ancient monuments and quaint cobblestone pavements radiated captivating and unique beauty. Heading up the antiquated street, we were astounded by a panoramic view of the scenery of Zhenjiang.

During the trip, we attended lessons with the Chongshi students. We were thoroughly engaged in the lessons as we got the chance to experience a different education approach aside from our own. The teachers exhibited willingness and care, ensuring that we felt supported and included throughout the learning process. Our buddies were always eager to help us understand the concepts we had yet to grasp, which helped us adapt quickly to their learning style. We were also invited to participate in the morning exercise session, where the entire school gathers together to do exercise. It was really fun and exciting as we all did our best to follow their moves.

In addition, we got the chance to experience a variety of courses provided by the school. During the Chinese landscape painting course, we learned how to draw some simple scenery using different techniques and collaborated with each other to compile a painting of Chinese landscapes along a long scroll, which allowed us to gain insight into this art form. During the tea brewing session, we learnt about the different types of traditional Chinese tea as well as how to brew and serve tea in the traditional Chinese manner. Although the experiences were short, it allowed us to fully experience and appreciate Chinese culture.

During dinner, a student of theirs played the harmonica as a divertissement. The harmonious tune showcased intertwined contrasting tempos and dynamics, which was a delight to listen to while devouring the local delicacies specially provided for us by the school cafeteria.

We also visited the Jiangsu University with our buddies, where we learnt about some details of the school. We also had the chance to experience guqin, which is a plucked seven-string traditional instrument that produces a quiet, relaxing sound and symbolises subtlety and refinement. The instructor showed us a simple piece, and we had the valuable chance to try out the instrument.

Since Nanjing is close to Zhenjiang, we travelled to the city for a day during the programme. We visited landmarks such as the Memorial of the Nanjing Massacre and the Nanjing Museum. We gained valuable insights into Chinese history, art, and culture. The museums stand as a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of China; our visits strengthened our appreciation for the resilience of the Chinese people as well as the importance of preserving and celebrating Chinese culture.

As the exchange programme drew to a close, a farewell ceremony unfolded at Zhenjiang Chongshi Girls' High School. Amidst the bittersweet atmosphere, students exchanged reluctant goodbyes, but the lasting friendships and memories would continue to flourish long after they had bid farewell to the school campus.

Although our time in Zhenjiang was brief, it was undeniably an experience that we will all cherish. The bonds of friendship that we formed during our stay will last a lifetime, and the knowledge we gained through the enriching learning opportunities will remain with us forever.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Zhenjiang Chongshi Girls’ High School for their gracious hospitality during these few days. We would also like to thank our teachers, Ms. C.M. Yip and Mr. F. Lau for graciously chaperoning us and providing us with vast guidance throughout the trip. Last but not least, we must extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Lau for providing us with this invaluable and meaningful opportunity. The trip to Zhenjiang has left an indelible mark on our hearts, with memories that will be cherished for a lifetime. We hope future participants will also create their own unforgettable experiences from this meaningful exchange programme.
