4 January 2019 -- Computer Club Visits

In the afternoon of 4th January, 60 Computer Club girls paid a visit to Sino Innovation Laboratory and the University of Hong Kong's Computer Science Department.

At the University of Hong Kong, members were introduced to the astounding variety of artificial intelligence-, financial technology- and computer science-related college programs and possible career paths. Together as a team, they worked to find out the ‘most convenient network’ in a virtual village using advanced mathematical calculations, and engaged in laboratory demonstrations of 3D-printing and virtual reality by the university’s professors and students. The products on display possessed powers beyond the realm of the imagination, such as being able to recognise and respond to human body movements. They were in a way considerably ahead from the fundamental concepts that the girls learnt in Computer Club general meetings and IT lessons.

At the Sino Innovation Laboratory, girls travelled fast forward in time to get a peek at innovations that have not been used by the public yet. They looked at titanium oxide-coated paints and curtains that purify the air, noise-cancelling car seats, smart trash bins that tell people when they are almost full, and a high-tech hotel room with new socket designs. Members were moved and inspired by how artificial intelligence stretches human creativity to achieve the impossible, and realized the importance of applying computer and science knowledge into new technologies to improve the quality of life.

All in all, the girls took home an eye-opening and profoundly rewarding experience.
