12 November 2021 -- Speech Day 2021

Following the resumption of whole-day school, the annual Speech Day was a joyous event held in the evening of 12 November. We were graced with the presence of many distinguished guests, members of the School Council, the Diocesan Old Girls Association, the Parent-Teacher Association, parents, and friends of the School, who joined together to celebrate our newest cohort of graduates, as well as the various academic and non-academic achievements of our girls.

The Headmistress Mrs. Lau congratulated all graduates on reaping the fruits of their labour despite the challenges posed by the pandemic. She highlighted the pioneering work of students and staff in the field of technology and innovation, which are key to developing skillsets needed to cope with the ever-changing future landscape. Mrs. Lau then praised the many accomplishments of our School Supervisor Mrs. Doris Ho, who will retire in December after serving the school over the past 37 years. With heartfelt gratitude, the school community rose to give Mrs. Ho a rapturous standing ovation.

We were then honoured to have Professor A. Lin Goodwin, Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Hong Kong, as our Guest of Honour. Professor Goodwin addressed the audience, sharing her insights from her personal experience in Singapore on the merits of attending an all-girls school. She went on to share precious advice with graduates: be present at each moment, beware of the “single story”, and to lead with kindness; finally, she closed her remarks with an excerpt of the poem Continue by Maya Angelou.

After the presentation of prizes and awards, the Head Girls and Assistant Head Girl represented the student body in delivering the Votes of Thanks in English, Cantonese and Mandarin, expressing their gratitude towards the School, parents, teachers, and classmates for their time of learning and growth at DGS. In a surprise performance dedicated to Supervisor Mrs. Ho, our Computer Club chairladies presented a drone display, which again culminated in thunderous applause. The night ended with the School Hymn in praise of our Heavenly Father for His munificent blessings upon our School, and Archbishop Andrew administered the closing prayer and benediction.
