Centennial Schools Mathematics Competition in Beijing (31 July – 5 August 2024)

The Centennial Schools Math Competition is an annual high school mathematics competition that was established in 2020. The competition follows the structure of the International Mathematical Olympiad, in which the students compete in two 4.5-hour sessions, with each session consisting of 3 challenging mathematical problems.

This year, our school sent a team of 6 students and 2 accompanying teachers to the competition held this past summer at Tsinghua High School. We were honoured to participate in this prestigious event, which gathered together 96 students from 16 centennial high schools across mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau.

During the competition, our team members were challenged with rigorous mathematical problems that tested their problem-solving skills, mathematical reasoning, and creativity. The competition was undoubtedly challenging and intense, but it also provided an invaluable learning experience for us. The hard work and dedication during the competition paid off, with one of our team members earning an Honourable Mention recognition for her exceptional performance. Congratulations!

Beyond the competition itself, we had the privilege of attending a talk by Dr. Koopa Koo on Fermat's Last Theorem. This insightful presentation not only deepened our understanding of this mathematical landmark but also inspired us to delve further into the world of advanced mathematics.

The most rewarding aspect of the Centennial Schools Math Competition was the opportunity to interact with mathematics enthusiasts and talented students from different high schools across China. These exchanges allowed us to learn from their perspectives, share our own experiences, and foster a greater appreciation for the diverse mathematical approaches and perspectives within the global community.

In conclusion, the Centennial Schools Math Competition 2024 was a truly enriching and unforgettable experience. We would like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to Mrs. Lau and the teachers-in-charge for providing us with this precious opportunity to hone our mathematical prowess, expand our knowledge, and forge connections with fellow mathematics enthusiasts. This competition has not only strengthened our passion for mathematics, but has also inspired us to continue pushing the boundaries of our mathematical understanding and abilities.
