NSS Preparation

The NSS Curriculum

The DGS NSS curriculum, proposed and adopted in May 2008 since the NSS Curriculum Working Group was set up in the 2006/07 school year, aims to promote students' learning capability and whole-person development. Under this programme, students from the School are offered a range of NSS subjects as well as Other Learning Experiences that provide diversified choices to suit the interests, aptitudes and abilities of students. Also, the breadth and depth of the academic and other learning experiences are delicately balanced through a vibrant school life that opens unique doors to our students, equipping them to lead as well as to interact and collaborate in teams. Reference was made to the Curriculum & Assessment Guides published in 2007 for the 24 NSS subjects, the university admission requirements announced in July 2006 and the OLE and SLP Guidelines released by the EDB. Allowance and flexibility for the 4th elective subject will be built into the 4 core and 3 elective subjects for some students with greater capacity and interest. The ingredient of Applied Learning is to be considered when more information and supportive measures are released by the EDB in late 2008 and early 2009 respectively.

Curriculum Framework - Elective subjects

Each student will take 4 core subjects and 3 elective subjects in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination. Students may consider taking a fourth elective including 'Other Languages' outside school hours. Such courses require a minimum of 600 hours spanning a three-year period. At the moment, Arabic, French, Japanese and Spanish classes for beginners and National Standard Putonghua classes are offered after school and on Saturdays at DGS to encourage language acquisition skills and exposure to different cultures. The 4 core subjects include Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics and Liberal Studies. The School will offer 15 elective subjects, out of the seven Key Learning Areas, as follows:

Other Learning Experiences

An OLE Team has been in operation from September 2008, after several meetings led by the Preparatory Group formed in the 2007/08 school year, to coordinate and refine the OLE programme. To streamline the structure for pragmatic and administration reasons, school ECAs are reorganized, expanded and subsumed under the OLE wing in September 2008. The School will offer students a range of OLE opportunities both within and outside normal school hours, encouraging them to participate and contribute in the five domains of OLE: Aesthetic Development, Career-related Experiences, Community Service, Moral and Civic Education, and Physical Development, as indicated in the table below:
